The Story

Go hunting in Wisconsin with Orvis-endorsed wingshooting guide Mark Nissen of Classic Bird Hunts. Catering to the foot hunter in pursuit of all wild game birds over classic pointing dogs, we have been in the guiding business for over 40 years. Hunt behind our world-class Brittanies or bring your own dogs. We have a guide for you, whether you choose ruffed grouse in the forests of Wisconsin or three species of quail in Arizona. Let Classic Bird Hunts provide wingshooting thrills—a brace of September Wisconsin woodcock followed by a covey of Arizona Mearns quail in January. These hunts are not for the faint of heart, as you will be walking miles in a day's hunt. However, heart-stopping memories will be your reward. If you are looking for traditional style foot hunts over savvy pointing dogs, Classic Bird Hunts is the outfitter for you. Upland hunting and bird dogs are our passion and our life and we enjoy nothing more than sharing the tradition with you.

In Northwest Wisconsin, you will be hunting relatively flat terrain mostly on trails through thickly-forested cover. Birds moved will be directly proportional to miles walked. These birds don't come easy. They will challenge your skill and stamina, making a bird in the bag ever so sweet. They don't call ruffed grouse "King of the Gamebirds" for no reason!

Season:

Roughly, September 15 through November 15.

Species:

Ruffed grouse, woodcock.

Region/Terrain:

No lack of prime grouse/woodcock cover here, most within a half-hour drive from your lodging. Some hunts will take place literally out your back door. With over 200 proven covers and over one million acres to choose from, finding a solitary place to hunt is not a problem.

Typical Weather:

Temps can very widely. Highs near 70 F and lows in the 40s for September; highs near 60 and lows near freezing in October; highs near 50 and lows below freezing in November. That being said, we've had highs in the 40s in October and even reach 70 degrees occasionally in November.

Rates:

Rates start from: $900/day for two hunters.
You can find all pricing information at: https://www.classicbirdhunts.com/pricing.html

What is Provided:

Lunch and transportation from your lodging are included. If bringing your own dogs, you will need to follow in your vehicle. A variety of lodging options are available from a rustic mansion to a simple hotel room. Shells are provided at no cost. Quality double guns are available for your use at no charge—you are just responsible for any damages. Snacks and beverages are provided in the field.

Other:

We encourage guests to bring their own dogs and enjoy getting them on birds.

Game cleaning and handling is provided by your guide.

Wireless internet available at lodgings. Cell phone service can be spotty.

Nearest commercial airports are DLH, a 70-minute drive, and MSP, a three-hour drive. Cable Union Airport for private planes is just 12 minutes from our headquarters.

Additional Activities:

Though we are not Orvis- Endorsed for fishing, we have been fishing local waters and Lake Superior for over 50 years. Many of our clients, especially on warmer days, choose to hunt the morning and fish the afternoon.

Duck hunting in season is also an option as a change of pace. Kayak down a local river or we can set you up with some decoys and a blind on local ponds and lakes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great experience! We had hunted with Mark & Randy in Arizona,so we knew what to expect in the way of not only the effort that they put forth to make our hunt both successful as well as enjoyable. Since we're fairly new to the sport of bird hunting They're greatly helpful in techniques that helped our success.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Arizona quail hunting with Mark Nissen Thoroughly enjoyed hunting the desert quail with Mark and his outstanding Brittanys! Not only was the quail hunting challenging but exhilarating as we had opportunities to bag all 3 of the Arizona quail species! Mark is an exceptional guide who works extremely hard to put his clients in birds but he also is a world class outdoor photographer that takes some amazing action photos of your hunt so you will have tangible reminders of your hunt to last a lifetime!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pursuit of the KING! Best upland game hunting ever! I started with Classic Bird Hunts some 30 years ago. Then Got my son involved, and now 2 grandsons. What a thrill to hunt with 3 generations and the best guide I have ever run into. Mark has been instrumental in getting all of us started, along with his outstanding Brittanys, turning us into avid grouse and woodcock hunters, and providing a fun and exciting experience. Hunting with Mark is hunting with a friend. He knows the coverts, the birds and the dogs and provides a world class upland hunt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great time, great guides Mark and Randy run a great guide service. They work tirelessly to put you in birds, and their dogs know the program. Just as importantly, the are very professional and ethical from both the business and hunting perspectives. I can give them my highest endorsement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can I give 6 stars? I look forward to my trip to Wisconsin all year long. Mark, Randy, and crew are one of the best outfits you will find for upland hunting. The dogs are great, well treated, and love to hunt. This hunt is not a cakewalk and you will earn your birds but totally worth the effort. The covers we hunt are excellent and productive. I plan to come back for as long as I can walk...
