The Story

Enjoy the hunting expertise of Steve Grossman, Orvis-endorsed wingshooting outfitter at Wild Prairie Lodge, when you travel to South Dakota. Wild Prairie is a destination for those who value a true wild-bird hunting experience. It's who we are. Having operated a shooting preserve for 30+ years, Double Gun Bird Hunts shifted focus nearly a decade ago and veered away from offering any released bird hunts. Double Gun Bird Hunts is now a business dedicated entirely to wild bird hunting. Wild Prairie and The Little Moran Grouse Lodge have become destinations for the dedicated few; each destination offers all wild birds... every day. Now, in owner Steve Grossman’s 40th year operating as an outfitter, the highest point of pride is the quality of the overall experience, from great hunting, birds, dogs, habitat, service, and hospitality. It has been said that our hunts are described as "in the purest tradition of those days when my grandfather hunted,” and “reaffirming the true roots of American wingshooting."

Wild Prairie Lodge is reminiscent of the Old West, featuring the Bucking Horse Saloon, and surrounded by a western landscape that is rich in history and beauty. There are no shuttles or buses here to transport hunters to the field; there are no big groups of hunters walking side by side. Hunts at Wild Prairie are not easy; there can be a lot of walking, yet we arrange each hunt based on the ability of our guests. All hunts are inclusive with lodging, meals, guides, and beverages included. Our guides are real dog men with good strings of setters and pointers; they are knowledgeable and respectful, and stewards of both land and game. As we've been told by many who hunt here at Wild Prairie, this is the real deal… there's nothing counterfeit here.

We begin September 1st for all prairie birds. However, most hunts start mid-September due to heat and warm weather.

Pheasant season begins the 3rd Saturday in October.

Sharp-tail grouse and pheasant are predominant with opportunities for huns and prairie chicken.

We are located along the river breaks of the Moreau and Missouri. Big buttes, draws, and native prairie make up the landscape—relatively easy terrain. Depending on our hunters, we can walk all day or make hunts shorter. It's your choice.

Typical Weather:

September 1st can be very warm at midday. In the early season, we typically begin at daybreak and stop mid-day.

We experience cooler mornings in November, warming throughout the day. We suggest you bring layers of clothing.
